Yeah, funnily enough, I currently have a Windows 2000 virtual machine instance that I use from time to time in order to run a particular client's software. It runs more or less as well as a standard Windows install.
I would triple-underline programming as far as Unix-alikes go. I know some people cut their teeth on certain kinds of IDEs or Visual Studio or icky junk like that, but I first learned using vi, less, grep, and sed. I just can't imagine programming without them. It's like trying to breathe underwater or something.

You can masquerade as a PC running windows, in many ways. Both locally as in the appearance of the gui and various applications you can run through wine/cedega (if done properly using scripts and tweaking fonts and appearance), and externally as in appearing to be a windows box to the world wide web.
It's fun and educational!

I tell you, man. You can also create music. All the music on the site I link to in my signature was made by me using my Ubuntu machine.

You can run OS X
(Sorry, mac-on-linux only works on ppc machines so it's really mac-on-mac there :) But it's great to not have to leave ubuntu anyway)

At the moment I never have to worry about apdating my antivirus software or get messages saying my subscription to it is is due.
Never have to fix my father-in-laws system as he has never borked Breezy in three months. (three months is an eternity for me)

You can take virtually anything that you see running and extend or modify it to your heart's content.
