Gnome 3.0 Shell and Unity running slowly

I think it has something to do with mutter since both Gnome 3.0 Shell and Unity(Ubuntu Netbook Edition) use mutter instead of compiz. System monitor is showing that it is only using 2% CPU and 50MB RAM. Is there anything I can do to fix this or will I need to wait for Ubuntu to fix it?

From the research I have done this seems to be a common problem with no fix. I tried using compiz fusion to switch to compiz, but that wiped out everything except the desktop itself for both Gnome 3.0 and Unity.
