Good imap email calendar

I want a good email and calendar service which can sync with my mail clients pda and allow me to access and use web based services over the internet. I assume an IMAP service is the best for this. Anyone know of a good free service or one with low fees. I want to be independent of an ISP so am avoiding an ISP based email address.

Any ideas people?
