i have enough memory and i just put a 60 gb hdd in so i know thats not the problem. Ive curretnly downloaded versions 8.04 and 10.00 neither worked im downloading 6. whatever that is now. im really trying to get back a linux system i had it for a short period before my system crashed and got my laptop up and running just need to put o/s on new hard drive. also it was originally xp home edition and i have product key on the bottom of laptop. so last resort i know i can just get a cd from somewere and do that but i need to get on a different system so i can take my programming further in the direction i need it to be.

thanks for taking a look.

Best is to stick to 10.04 and 10.10. Trying to install an obsolete version will only give trouble.

Can you run a live boot of the two versions stated above?

How much is 'enough memory'?
