I've go AWN on the side because it makes more sense to me
I want as much vertical space on my screen as possible from scrolling webpages
I have tones of wasted space on the side of my screen, because I have a widescreen monitor (more so when I plug into my 1600x900)
don't think I'll ever be able to go back now

Its a screen let called folderview. The screenlet is targeted at a folder in my documents called apps, which is full of application launchers. Allowing me to launch my apps from it! :)

Running Xmonad as the WM in Gnome. Using xmonad log applet (http://uhsure.com/xmonad-log-applet.html) to display focussed window and current workspace in the panel.

awesome with insignificant gtk and faenza-dark, both modified to fit my needs

the wallpaper is randomly selected from a designated folder, resized, cropped and blended with a vignette and shadow layer, so everything stays easily readable no matter what the wallpaper looks like

ooo that looks pretty interesting, ill be sure to check it out. i always find that the problem with tiling window managers, or even things like dvtm is that i spend more time cycling through the tile layouts or making my desired window the primary than it takes to do my keyboard shortcuts in openbox :(

Theme is Orta.
Icons are Faenza.
Screenlets are ClearCalendar, RingSensors, and CircleClock.
Using DockbarX and a modified Mintmenu on the left dock, and a relatively standard set of applets on the top dock.
My top left corner goes into Compiz Scale and my bottom right corner goes into Desktop Wall.

I cannot figure out what the wallpaper is or who made it, but I know I got it on gnome-look.org. I think it's something like Ubuntu Stainless Steel, but I'm not sure. I tried to find it again but I had no luck.

What app you using for top panel menu?
Right-click on the GNOME panel.
Select Add to Panel...>Application Launcher, and click on Forward at the bottom of the same dialog box.
Choose Accessories then click on Add down the bottom. Repeat the exercise for Games through to Administration.

To get rid of the arrows, open up gedit. Paste the following:

style "panel-arrow-remove"

#the following removes the arrows from the panel
{
engine "pixmap"
{
image
{
function = ARROW
recolorable = TRUE
overlay_file = ".arrow-blank.png"
overlay_border = {2,2,2,2}
overlay_stretch = FALSE
arrow_direction = UP
}

image
{
function = ARROW
recolorable = TRUE
overlay_file = ".arrow-blank.png"
overlay_border = {2,2,2,2}
overlay_stretch = FALSE
arrow_direction = DOWN
}
}
}

widget_class "*PanelToplevel*" style "panel-arrow-remove"Save this as .gtkrc-2.0 in your home folder. Reboot, and the arrows should've disappeared.

It's quite rational on wide screen monitors with much more horizontal than vertical space. Although I'm so used to horizontal panels I keep m that way.

Thanks, GS, btw is there a guide to get terminal colors? mine looks very dull.I assume you're running Konsole (or whatever KDE's native terminal emulator is called these days). I think it's similar to Gnome and Xfce terminals, meaning you can right-click on it and fire up a GUI to control preferences, right? If so, you don't really need a .Xdefaults file for term colors.

There's no set rule for term colorschemes. You don't really need to apply color theory, but it's usually a 'safe' choice to have a mixture of split-complements, triads and tetrads in your scheme.
Try this site: http://www.colorschemer.com/online.html
It's good to start with blue, since it's usually the most muted color of the bunch.

Some pre-made ones available here:
http://phraktured.net/terminal-colors/
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=51818&p=1
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic/9935/post-your-xdefaults-and-terminal-apps-colorschemes-with-screenshot/

If you wanna tweak you bash prompt (I assume you're on bash), you'll need to mod the PS1 in your ~/.bashrc.
This link should give you an idea: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Color_Bash_Prompt (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Color_Bash_Prompt)
or just PM me if you're on Zsh or need help with other stuff. I'm pretty useless, but I do try at least.

Hope this helps. :)
Cheers~

I always do minimal installs. Since 9.10 I guess. Exceeding 300 Mb was really hard to do, chrome, opera.....doesn't matter. Midori does very well. That dark pic I posted is Squeeze businesscard openbox ( no gnome whatsoever ), all lightweight stuff ( as far as gui goes that is). Still, posted my son's screenie somewhere in here. That's karmic minimal on a 15 year old compaq 5000, 512 Mb ram, amd durion single core, nvidia vanta card.
@ wojox: My bad, really thought the cube was fusion-icon.

My take on a minimal desktop.

I first followed this guide OMG Ubuntu (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/03/follow-this-customization-guide-for-a-slick-ubuntu-desktop/), then added my own changes here and there.

I use AWN with the following applets:

AWN Main Menu
File Browser Launcher
Seperator
Launcher/Taskmanager
Expander
Indicator Applet
Weather Applet
Digital Clock

Wallpaper is from Bulletstorm: Epicgames Forum (http://forums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=728491)

Koleoptero, for the panel, that's Talika applet which is a panel dock and you can customize the icon if you pin the application (it handles the buttonless window too, click the icon to minimize/unminimize, middle click it to close, double-click the title bar to maximize). For the rest, disable the Menu (right-click a toolbar and uncheck Menu Bar) then replace the "Iceweasel" text with an icon via userchrome.css...
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/01/how-to-reduce-the-firefox-4-menu-button-to-an-icon-in-linux/
... and customize that icon by replacing the path w/ a custom one...
#appmenu-toolbar-button {
list-style-image: url("/home/hhh/.mozilla/firefox/uyq41hgo.default/chrome/menu.png");
}I removed the Title Bar text (set Title font size to 0) and buttons via Xfce's window manager preferences.

Got any sites with directions on how to set up such a thing? It's getting annoying to do last-minute tweaks because the desktop doesn't want to show up, and just has a dainty gray color using openBox + PcManFM.

You forgot ROX-Filer also does desktop wallpaper and icons. It's a different paradigm to PCManFM (spatial rather than tree view + tabs), but it's pretty easy to use

Try ROX-Filer with Openbox and bmpanel2. You'll need to make some adjustments in the compatibility section of the ROX-Filer options, but after that it should work fine.

In order to use ROX-Filer as a wallpaper/desktop launchers app just add the line

rox --pinboard=MyPinboard

to your autostart file in ~/.config/openbox

bmpanel 2 can be downloaded from http://code.google.com/p/bmpanel2/

To set a particular theme enter the following line in your OB autostart file

bmpanel2 --theme=whateverthehellIwantdude

You obviously do, my screenshots were taken right after boot, you have firefox and other stuff running. I only have what you see in the tray, plus I've removed all the mono stuff, all the ubuntuone/couchdb stuff, update manager/notifier, various other little things lol. So it boots to very low memory usage, but after several hours of intensive workout it never drops below 300 megs.

EDIT: XFCE can be much lighter than gnome if you need. Crunchbang xfce is proof for that, it uses 50mbyte ram after boot.

Okay, I've said it before, and I'll say it again. And don't take this as any form of distro elitism; I may not use Ubuntu, but I respect it greatly as well as what it does for the FOSS ecosystem.

But the fact of the matter is that Xubuntu is a complete hog compared to XFCE on any other distro. I run a rather liberal desktop setup with a fair deal of eyecandy, xfce-panel replaced with AWN, etc. And still, on 64-bit, with enough RAM in my system to where Linux would be as liberal as possible in using it, I'm using less RAM than Xubuntu. If you want XFCE, do yourself a favor and use it on Mint, #!, Arch... anywhere but Ubuntu.

Well, here's my "minimal" install: http://i.imgur.com/hUufx.png

It's over 400 MB in RAM too. I'm sorry, but I absolutely hated PekWM. Even after trying to get it to ALT+Tab correctly, it still wouldn't ALT+Tab between minimized windows.

Rox-filer was worse even still: Strange controls (Right-click was an annoyance, and dragging binaries for set application was out of the question and don't get me started on how the auto-scrolling by just moving the mouse up or down is "simple"), one-click goes to the directory/file.

So I had to go xfwm4, as I wasn't about to mess around with openbox at this time; and lxpanel was being a pain (though I'd rather use it if I was using openbox.) So in all, because I must use xfdesktop and thunar, and pidgin (because I don't really care for finch)... I take up over 400 MB of RAM.

amd64 of course. Also, since I'm using murrine-themes, XFCE will spit out errors in the background whenever a dialog pops up, like so:

/usr/share/themes/MurrinaAzul/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:75: Murrine configuration option "scrollbar_color" is no longer supported and will be ignored.
/usr/share/themes/MurrinaAzul/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:78: Murrine configuration option "gradients" is no longer supported and will be ignored.

Just a suggestion.

You could lower your CPU usage by using something like conky rather than all those screenlets.

I tried Conky (and some others like it), but those types get on my nerves after a while. The sensors I just find much simpler and more uniform. The System Monitor eats up a few % and I had the TV going on the other monitor at the time ... CPU at idle generally averages ~10%, so the screenlets aren't that bad, hehe.

BUT ... about 650MB of RAM used on a fresh boot ... which would drive some people here crazy!

I agree with what you are saying.

Everyone uses their computer differently, have different hardware specs, and have their preferences.

That is why it was a suggestion rather than a criticism. As you correctly deduced, I was looking at the numbers displayed by the screenlets.

Conky is definitely not esthetically pleasing and it is cumbersome to set up. :)

Mark76
March 11th, 2011, 02:53 PM
PekWM doesn't really work with ROX (I know. I've tried it). And I don't think you've given ROX a fair go (you can also set the run action for a mimetype by entering the name of the program you want the file to open with in a little box in the run action window. So there's no need to drag and drop if you don't want to).

Lucradia

What about if I don't know the specific bin/command? And don't know where the file is? And no one seems to help me find it by posting a thread? Aptitude doesn't show commands tied to a package either. Or maybe I want to pipe something through more than one command?

Mark76
March 11th, 2011, 03:39 PM
You could just start the thread yourself.

Bin commands can be found in one of six places: /bin/ /sbin/, /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, /usr/local/bin and /usr/local/sbin. Userland applications live in one of the four /usr/ subdirectories. Most Linux application commands are pretty straight-forward, usually just the name of the program (e.g. if you wanted to start Firefox from the terminal or a command line you'd just type firefox and then press enter).

I don't know anything about piping. But if you start a new thread I'm sure someone will be able to help.
