Today I added the https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa packages to my system repositories and upgrade the provided packages to try out the Gallium3D drivers.
It did successfully started using Gallium3D but using the r300g drivers instead of the r600g drivers.

Because of this I generated the xorg.conf file (sudo Xorg -configure) and copied it to it's proper location (sudo cp xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf) with adding the option "ForceGallium" "True" to it. This did not make any difference.

Specs:
ATI Radeon X850TX
Ubuntu 10.10

Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
298 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.535 FPS
...

Based on the fact that it mentions r300 in the different places I can only assume it's not using r600.
What could be the cause of the problem and how can I fix it?

Let me know if you need any more info.

This option should be in the "Device" section, do you have it there!?

...forget it...

I don't know how I did it but somewhere along the line of reading up, testing and configuring I got the impression that my video card was suitable for the r600g drivers. This is of course complete nonsense since we are dealing with a r480 generation card.

My bad.
