I thought that I had successfully upgraded my lap-top using Update Manager from 9.10 to 10.04.2 but have hit a problem in getting into it. It seemed that my original 9.10 log-in name and password were picked up during the installation and the Log-in name is correctly presented on the log-in panel but when I insert my correct password, the panel disappears (with no "Authentication Error" displayed). But the system just repeats the Log-in panel. I have tried rebooting all to no avail. If I use the Gnome Failsafe option, I find that my password works correctly when authentication is required elsewhere, so it must be around within the works. Where can I look to find what is not joining up properly? Help[ please.
