i'm having a problem in downloading the repository indexes.its giving me the following error.

""Could not download all repository indexes
The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

pls post ur sources.list:

gksu cat /etc/apt/sources.list

Maybe this xmbc website link will help http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Installing_XBMC_for_Linux

This has something to do with XMBC? And it is blocking all of my updates? Actually, I thought I unstalled XMBC. I don't need it. How do I get rid of it? Thanks!

Old_Grey_Wolf
October 24th, 2011, 12:55 AM
Using the menus "System > Administration > Update Manager" open the update manager. Then click on the tabs until you find one where the PPA for xmbc is located. Then remove the check in the checkbox.

Old_Grey_Wolf
October 24th, 2011, 01:01 AM
If there is no PPA listed in update manager, it may be necessary to clean out the update lists that may still have xmbc in them due to partial updates. You can do that by entering these commands in the terminal
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I'm a little slow right know as it is time for me to go to bed :)

Uh-oh - that caused the following errors:
......

You're running as root; which is not recommended, so just type in the following commands
mkdir /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
apt-get update and post the errors you get. In the future don't hijack another thread.

Tiddens
October 24th, 2011, 11:30 PM
Thanks! I really appreciate your help. Sorry about hijacking a thread. I don't have problems often enough to remember how to start a new thread and couldn't see anything to click on to do it. Also, I use root because half the time I try to do something it doesn't let me without being root.

If you are ever in San Diego, I'd look forward to meeting you...

The updating was finally successful, with one error remaining if you can advise how I can get rid of it:

Best method to getaway from this problem is to install fix404. You can read about it more here:

Under Ubuntu, the APT package index is a database containing all packages of repositories (PPAs) defined in the /etc/apt/sources.list file. To update this database after adding some repositories, we need to use this command from the Terminal:

sudo apt-get update

Sometimes, when running the command given above, we get error messages (404 Not Found) that are the result of wrong PPAs, which may slow down the update process via the Terminal. In fact, this 404 Not Found error messages are not harmful at all, but you can use Fix404 to detect and remove these PPAs.

To install Fix404 on Ubuntu 11.04, launch the Terminal and run these commands:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:lkjoel/fix404
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install fix404

To install on Ubuntu 10.10/10.04, download this deb package here.

To start using Fix404, run this command (root privileges required):

sudo fix404

Then follow displayed instructions to disable PPAs causing the 404 Not Found Error.
