10.04 runs pretty well on our computers but we're considering upgrading to 10.10 not because we don't like 10.04 but we just want to stay with the "latest and greatest" system.

If you've upgraded, are you glad you did or do you wish you stayed with 10.04?

Do all of the programs you ran in 10.04 run the same with no troubles in 10.10?

Was upgrading a pain-in-the-neck to do?

Just looking for your thoughts on upgrading.

Hi, I assume you are talking about large scale upgrades. Is that so?

For an individual with 4 computers at home. My upgrades went without any issues. All the programs I normally use are fine in 10.10 as well. One of them is 64 bit install and even that is running great.

Cheers

A word of caution:

Understanding the new live installer/ubiquity: Release 10.10 (Maverick)

The new installer has some problems, it has changed quite a bit in this release compared to 10.04. It is now being recommended by several members that the "Install alongside existing operating system" option not be used. The danger is that this option will overwrite the other operating system. It has been happening. Read the thread listed at the beginning of this post.

I personally used 10.10 for about 4-7 months, decided the new features weren't worth it and reinstalled Xubuntu 10.04 (Yay for seperate /home partition)

10.04 is supported on the desktop till 2013, 2015 on the Server IIRC. You might as well stay with it, that and Natty's kernels are getting backported via the kernel teams ppa.

10.04 may not be as up to date, but to me it seems at least 80-90% more stable than 10.10, and 100% more stable than 11.04.

If you plan on upgrading to 11.04 then consider upgrading to 10.10 . 10.10 has been the best of the three Ubuntu operating systems that I have had installed . I have not been affected by a bug or even the slightest glitch .

If you are planning to do a clean installation of 11.04 , just wait out the next month on 10.04. User experience may vary I can only hope 11.04 works as well as 10.10 has for me.

My opinion is that you should move up to 10.10!

I loved 10.04, very much!
and really had no desire to switch to 10.10..
But, in 10.04, a few of my favorite programs didnt work, or didnt work properly, (and I had graphics card issues with it) So, I decided id see if 10.10 had the same problems, and it did not!
and Ive been using it since!

now i love it (10.10) even more than I did lucid! lol

Most amazing OS ever, imo/ime.

Id use 10.10 for the rest of my life if I could! :P lol
i wont even bother with 11.04.

I cant stand that unity rubbish,
and I love 10.10 too much to even care. lol

Upgrading has always been easy in my experience.

I tried 10.10 and had lots of problems with external display working properly. It works just fine with my 10.04 xorg.conf but the same xorg.conf wouldn't work in 10.10. Using only laptops in our house external display support is pretty important. With a separate home partition, you can easily try it, and reinstall 10.04 if you don't like it w/o losing your application settings. You still have to reinstall all the apps you use when doing a reinstall though. Have fun.
