Suitable release for 512 mb ram 1.4 ghz processor ?

Hi all!

I'm an absolute beginner. Excitedly, I've just installed the ubuntu 10.10 release with no problem. But it looks like my hardware can't handle this release . I have 512mb ram and 1.4ghz processor as i mentioned in title. So, can you recommend me any of the older releases or other alternative ways to make my ubuntu faster ?

I run 10.04 LTS on a 512 for my kids. But it lags hardcore so....

Don't install an unsupported Ubuntu to speed up the system. Rather go for something which was born light.


Chromium is a big boost for an old system, by the way.
