View Full Version : Looking for a good Win Forum

I have been a Ubuntu user for a while now. I don't use Windows anymore. I have have been able to get help for my Ubuntu problems from this forum by lurking, up until now.

I have to say that I am extremely impressed with the Ubuntu community: their expertise, kindness, patience, willingness to help, etc.. This is a really great forum!

I have a friend who is having problems with Win Vista. He asked me to help him. I stopped using Win with XP, and really know nothing about XP except the very basics. I have absolutely no knowledge of Vista.

Can any of you recommend a forum somewhere on the Internet that is really great like the Ubuntu Forum, but is targeted specifically for Windows tech support?

THANKS!

I think you will have to search very long to find good windows support forums. Windows users have never had the same habit of sharing information and knowledge like GNU/Linux users. Your best guess it probably to use a search engine to find help for the problem, there might be some good windows forums out there but I don't think that's the kind of place people from this forum hang out on.

Don't know about Vista specifically but, I can whole heartedly recommend Seven Forums (http://http://www.sevenforums.com/). I'm sure they could point one in the correct direction.

I love Linux like operating systems - especially Ubuntu, but I work with Windows, and Windows XP and Seven are not that bad as people are portraying them...Microsoft has large official forums, in fact, they are so big that you have to take a deep breath and dive in...not as pleasant as Ubuntu Forums, but lots of answers and Windows info:

Microsoft Technet forums (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-us/categories/)

and

Microsoft Answers forums (http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/categories)

I have already used Google and grabbed some info. I have put said info into what is going to be my post that I will eventually put out there, once I find a reputable forum.

The problem with my friend is that he has a whole bunch of stuff on his laptop. The last time he did a Win Restore point was about 6 months ago. If my my memory serves me correct, that was the time I did Win Restore for him, explaining to him the importance of Win Restore, etc.. And of course, he has not done a Restore Point since then.

Now he has some important work he needs to get done, he needs to install a bunch of software to do said work, he does not have any Vista restore DVDs, and he does not have the money to pay a tech to fix his laptop for him. I can try to fix it for him, but I don't want to make his problems worse than they are right now. (Of course I will do a Win Restore Point before trying anything, but that is no guarantee against anything).

I want to make absolutely sure that the stuff I have found on Google is correct before I try it on my friend's laptop. That is why I was looking for a reputable forum, (to double check what I have found with somebody I know I can trust). And I trust you people, the members of this forum! So that is why I thought I could start here.

I wish the rest of the Internet was as great as this forum is!!!

Anyway, the other users in this thread have suggested a forum to try, (SevenForums (http://www.sevenforums.com)), so I am going there.

THANKS!

Just a note: System Restore isn't the same as having a good back up of yer data.

Another option is for one of us with their own server to start a new forum. Any takers?

I'd offer, but I'm not sure if my internet connection and server machine are up to the task if it gets busy.

You'd be how surprised the community is on the Seven Forums. They are quite helpful. 7 Forums is like the Ubuntu Forums of Windows.

Nice suggestion, but I'm sure it would be a huge undertaking to get a new forum up and running.

True: there's more to it than making sure that you have good hardware, a good connection, and choosing/installing/configuring appropriate software.

If I had a 50/50 network line, I could host a forum straight from my computer to start out with.

Hell if I had a 50/50 line, I'd be hosting my own websites from my computer. :(
