I'm working on a hobby fps game with some friends, and we're trying to decide what engine to use. The tried and true ioquake3 seems to be the most obvious choice, because I don't want to have to wait until September to be able to use the doom 3 engine. But I've run into quite a few very good engines built on the quake codebase. Right now, I'm looking at dark places. In nexuiz, it's frankly amazing. HDR, AA, and generally incredible lighting features. Only open game that's ever managed to slow down my computer significantly. So, anybody know other engines with better video quality than dark places?http://hoangdiephuu.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/41-nexuiz_screenshot.jpgfile:///tmp/moz-screenshot.png

hm, not too bad. Know of any with decent water? Water is my OCD absolute pet peeve in video games. I absolutely have to have my precious perfect water *twitch twitch*. Anything less than crytek 3 water should just give up now.

Maybe you could use Ogre3d http://www.ogre3d.org/ with hydrax extension http://www.ogre3d.org/tikiwiki/Hydrax http://www.ogre3d.org/tikiwiki/img/wiki_up/Hydrax_04_5_.png

Cube 2 (Sauerbraten) has good water, but it might not be blingy enough for you in other areas.

Unigine is excellent, but it's not free and not OSS.

Ogre3D is pretty awesome. I played with it for a while. The only thing I didn't like is that they strap you into only using their file formats. Also, when I messed with it, it didn't even have simple gravity, like Irrlicht. It was straight 3D only. Other than that, I really liked Ogre3D.
