Cairo - Dock has come a long way. One of my biggest beefs with ubuntu was the awful looking system tray. I was able to shorten and move Ubuntu's top panel (tray area) and with the help of an app called Doncky included with Cairo-Dock make the system tray resemble a small dock on the desktop. You can hide it or leave it visible - your choice.
Here's a link with a snapshot of the desktop.

You can also do the same thing with awn, which has
a notification area applet.

Well, the bloody awfulness of Cairo Dock's systray forced me to keep a Gnome Panel around instead and is the reason I ultimatley switched to AWN, and mine's still prettier (laid out much like Stinkeye's) but I'm glad to hear that they've at least improved it a bit. = )

AWN is still the modern panel IMO. Cairo Dock's configuration is an utter mess, and I think it makes a lot of weird decisions based on the idea that every applet should also be able to be a screenlet.

+1 awn, but it has to be the ppa version.
