I'm trying to get my start in a translation career (German -> English), and, to make job searching easier (especially when going for in-house jobs, as opposed to freelance), am looking to do some volunteer work in the field to build up a portfolio that I can show to prospective employers.

Does anybody know of any German FOSS projects that are looking for volunteers help with translation/localization into English (either of the software's interface itself, or of the documentation)?

The Ubuntu Translation Team (https://translations.launchpad.net/+groups/ubuntu-translators) is always looking for help.

But as I understand, they're generally translating *away* from English, and the best results are generally obtained when one translates into one's native language.

Generally, though, in the Free Software world translation goes in the English -> Native language direction, as developers choose English as the original language for the application messages. This allows having one common denominator as the source language for all volunteer translators.

In any case, I'd recommend you get in touch with the German translation team: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-l10n-de
