Installed alternative iso. prompted to restart then get a 'verifying DMI pool data , no disk' error grub rescue>

Any ideas much appreciated.

Welcome to the forums :-)

I think you didn't install Grub loader at all or if installed, it didn't get installed correctly.

In order to diagnose the problem, we need you to boot and Ubuntu Live (desktop) CD. Why did you use the alternate installer? Can you successfully boot the desktop edition on the same PC?
