Has anyone used this script recently (or at all)?
http://chromeos-cr48.blogspot.com/2010/12/easy-way-to-install-ubuntu-on-your-cr.html

The full instructions are a bit intimidating and seem very time consuming:

I actually ran this through the other day. The download took ages but everything ran silky-smooth and I am shocked by how well ubuntu runs on this thing.

The script works like a charm, just make sure you plug yours in before carrying it out, even with the killer battery life I wouldn't chance it.

With just a few tweaks to get the multitouch working (I used this link HERE (http://bigbrovar.aoizora.org/index.php/2011/01/12/enable-multitouch-support-for-clickpad-on-ubuntu-10-10/)) and some updates and remapping of the keys, it's a great machine. Only thing I haven't quite gotten working yet is the horizontal multitouch scrolling, but no big deal.

Only thing I haven't quite gotten working yet is the horizontal multitouch scrolling, but no big deal.

I too went through the process and am quite happy. I might decide to flash the bios and install ubuntu as the main OS.

In the mean time, I was able to get horizontal two-finger scrolling working and I used the same link that you did. Did you check the box in the mouse preferences that says "Enable horizontal scrolling"?
