I'd like to have a system/resource monitor on my taskbar that I can always see... suggestions?

(I have the default one that came with Ubuntu but it is a full window as far as I can see.)

There is a system monitor applet. Right click on the panel and select "Add to Panel...". Search for "system monitor" and it should show up. Once its there you can right click and choose "Preferences" - here you can choose what you want to show.

I think conky is something for you. It's not on your taskbar, but a great way to see all the info you can get about your computer

conky images (http://www.google.be/images?q=conky&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:nl:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=-GFcTYHJB4qFhQe1kMCCDQ&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CFkQsAQwAw&biw=1600&bih=763)

It is not so easy to install, so I would sugest you use conkycolors from here: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/CONKY-colors?content=92328

installation instructions are included. when you have problems, just tell them.
