installed 10.10 on older compaq presario when u boot into ubuntu it just has the background screen can any one help also was wandering if all i have is usb mouse and keyboard would this effect anything wouldnt ubuntu find drivers atomatically

Ubuntu will work with USB mouse and keyboard. hardware specs please?

intel celeron w 128ram harddrive had like 15 to 16 gig before install
was wanting to try ubuntu check it out thought might put this desktop where my kids could get on thought ubuntu would be safer from viruses since kids would be on

128 megabytes? if so i would recommend Xubuntu or Lubuntu. Gnome is too heavy for those specs. Note these will all be slow, i would have to recommend a different distro, check this out: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1688348

I would vote for Lubuntu. Xubuntu is not much lighter than a regular Ubuntu.
