Can I upgrade system without total format?

Can I upgrade my OS to be equivalent to 10.10 from 9.04 or do I have to totally wipe it? I want to keep my settings on things, some of them were a pain to get right.

No. You cant upgrade from 9.04 to 10.10. You can only upgrade to next newer version.
So, if you really want to upgrade, then you have to move from 9.04->9.10->10.04->10.10 :)
