After a fresh install of ubuntu on a new Laptop everything is fine. Enabling the restricted Nvidia driver gives me some pretty strange behavior:

ubuntu boots fine I can see some output on the screen and the ubuntu logo, then just before the login screen should appear the screen becomes plain black and stays black. Recovery mode behaves exactly the same. I can't do anything, Ctrl-Alt-F1 does nothing.
edit: I have this cute hard-disk status light that blinks when I hit Ctrl-Alt and any of the F-Keys

Now the weird thing is that when I hit the power button on the laptop, the ubuntu logo re-appears and the system shuts down smoothly. After re-installation everything works fine again until I enable the Nvidia driver.

Advice on how to get myself a nice little console ON SCREEN would be highly appreciated. I'd rather try find a fix than re-install yet again. I have access to the partition from the livecd. Is there a way to slowly step through the start-up process and have some verbose output?
