Hello,
At the moment we have two desktops, one Windows one Ubuntu (this one) and they are connected via a crossover cable. The Windows one is connected to the web by a Speedtouch ADSL modem.

We are losing the Windows computer and we will have a Windows laptop which wont be there all the time but i want the Ubuntu box to be online all the time.

So i found this (http://pctradecomponents.com/adsl-port-modem-router-with-firewall-p-285.html) and was wondering if i got that and plugged my Ubuntu box in and kept it plugged in all the time and plugged the laptop in every so often (both via ethernet).

Would i be able to get on the web fine?
Would i be able to manage the router from Linux?

Thanks, Rowan.

That router looks like it has one ethernet port and one USB port to connect to the computers.

So connecting both of your computers to the router via ethernet is kinda going to be difficult :)

That said, if you connect one computer via ethernet and one by USB it'll do all you are asking. I'd be inclined to go for a 4 port ethernet ADSL modem/Router. They're not expensive and allow greater flexability latter.

Access to the device would be through a web browser so no problems with Ubuntu there.

Ok, so maybe this (http://www.redstore.com/OEMNET073) one instead? It's 4 port and cheaper.

That second one looks like it will serve your purposes well.

i went for a wireless router but f**ked up big time and didn't get an ADSL one. I've already got it and on the back there is a port that says "modem port".

Is there anyway i can get on the internet using this wireless router without a pc around?

I suppose i could by a normal adsl router if that would help?

Thanks, Rowan.

Generally, routers are not connection-specific. Post the exact model of your router.

just get a ethernet modem and you'll be fine but just a warning routers suck when using p2p

Not necessarily true. If you have problems, try port forwarding.

I have a Netgear WGR614 (http://www.netgear.com/products/details/WGR614.php).

Would an ethernet modem work without a computer there?

Thanks, Rowan

You mention the Speedtouch earlier in the post. Still got it?

You should be able to plug that into the router and then set-up the router to handle the logging onto the internet through the modem. Then you won't need a computer on to share the internet.

Yep, its USB only though?

I found this (http://safecom.cn/code/sub/category.asp?subcatid=1&prdid=184) and was wondering if it could do the job?

I only found one ethernet modem and it cost £40, which is a bit much.

Also, does anyone know why i can not configure my router when going to http://192.168.1.1 or http://routerlogin.net in my browser on Windows or Ubuntu?

With the USB you are a bit stuffed as there is not much it will plug into.

That safecom is a rebranded Netgear and they should be available in 4port models and additional wireless. That safecom you listed only has 1 ethernet port which is no good.

What is your budget ???
I assume you live in the UK ?

You said you are getting a laptop, will it require wireless acces or via lan cable ?

You basically need a ADSL Router with built-in modem. Something like a Netgear DG834 or the DG834G which has wireless as well or Linksys Linksys AG241ADSL2 Gateway or WAG54G

Hard to make a recommendation without knowing your budget. Some of the cheaper stuff is not that great.

Try 192.168.0.1

Try 192.168.0.1
Nope, doens't work.

Are you saying that the router i just payed £40 cannot be used?!?
I thought if i used that Safecom one to get on the internet then plugged that into the Netgear one then woudn't that work?

Thanks, Rowan.

Does the store your bought it from have a returns policy?

While you should be able to plug the modem into the router and go that way, it will be a little bit fiddly as the Safecom is also a router... a router plugging into a router will make configuration a little tricky. It also seems a rather expensive way to do it.

hopefully dabs will reply soon.not very likely!

i have a speedtouch modem too which i want to replace with a router which has a built-in ASDL modem. atm livecds don't work and it took me about a day to get the speedtouch modem to work with Ubuntu.

can someone recommend what i should get? right now i only have one working computer  but i'll add another soon. i only want something which will work with Linux and my connection.

i don't mind spending around £50 or if that price range isn't very good i can spend more. thanks.

Do you need wireless with it ?

Look at Netgear, Billion, Linksys. I have never used Billion but heard good things about them and they seem relatively cheap compared to other brands. You can pick up a Billion 4port router/modem for under 40gbp. Draytek Vigor is also something I never used but they look like good products, looks a bit pricey though.

hi, thanks for the reply

no, i don't think i'll need wireless, but if there's a nice ASDL router which is wireless and it can be turned off then i'd be happy to get it because i'd like to learn how to secure it. but, like i said, only if the wireless can be disabled.

really, i'd just like to get something good, if i have to pay more for it then i don't mind. i like Linksys, i'll have a look for something tomorrow then see if anyone recommends it :) though, if someone knows a good model i'd love to find out what it is :D thanks.
