OK i'm a newbie linux user but I like to read so I figure things out pretty good. Only problem is when there's no information to read I can't learn anything. So I've looked and looked but I can't find anything on the KDM theme manage that comes with kubuntu 10.10.

SO here's what I want to do:

All I want to do is just change the login and splash screens to something more to my liking when I got to System settings -> System Administration -> Login Screen , which is the KDM that comes on kubuntu (trust me I looked for kdmtheme under KpackageKit I get a chance to pick new themes I go through and find something I like and go to install and it doesn't show. All I get is the original one and that's it.

So please if anyone can give me a detailed explanation as to why it doesn't show up or how I may go about changing these two things I would be most grateful. Thanks in advance.

welcome to the forums.

go to system settings then click login screen..

everything you need for kdm is in there, even the ability to download new themes.

YES! That is my problem! :D every time I find a theme that I like and I hit install it should appear on the list with the default one correct? It doesn't for some reason and I've got NO clue why. I looked around and someone mentioned that it wouldn't work if the theme wasn't updated to kde 4.5 or at least I think that's what he said. Would this have anything do to with it?

Oh and thanks for the welcome and help I really appreciate this. I"m trying to dive head long into linux and i've hit a -strong- learning curve so every little bit is like mount everest to me. So again THANKS! :)

kde is actually a desktop on top of a debian linux based operating system, what you see is not a theme, it's a kde desktop environment with abilities to change themes. it's fully customizable.

you can learn a little more about kubuntu here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubuntu

and look here for kde http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kde

I looked around and someone mentioned that it wouldn't work if the theme wasn't updated to kde 4.5

kde 4.5 is included with 10.10 by default, however kde 4.6 is out and 10.10 users can upgrade their desktops to that version, here http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-sc-4.6

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

some questions to your theme problem

after installing kubuntu, did you get all system updates?

it is possible some things won't work on early versions, although i never tried changing that theme in kde 4.5, i will try it with 4.6 and report back whether or not it works.

it doesn't work, selecting the available themes from the web fails to change the theme even if it states that it's installed.

i'm certain it'll get fixed by the next version.

So it's just something that should be fixed in the april release. Is there a method to manually install? I could give you screen shots if you need further information about something specific.

in my screenshot notice the button "install new theme"

you can get the theme from here http://kde-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=40x41

with the "install new theme" button, you can navigate to the location of the downloaded theme.

assuming it works

Yeah I finally got it working somehow. It may have been part of the 10 updates that I had today maybe not. Using the gui's picker doesn't work still but your method works so I just downloaded from the site and some work. :) Thanks.
