Is there a good achiever for ubuntu? the default archieve manager, though manages to unpack some formats..it fails at some like .ace. Also the archiving ratio is not good. is there a better one?

For general information, see here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FileCompression

You are right about .ace, it needs the unace package installed and then unpack from the terminal.

As far as other archive managers:
7zip is in the repositories, but appears to be command line only (from what I can tell)

Personally I like 7zip. Open synaptic, put "7zip" in the search box and it will bring up the packages for you. From then on when you choose to compress something the 7z format will be one of the available options.

I have 7zip installed.
but the thing is none of the formats seem to give a good compression ratio :)
I want to compress back-ups of useful files. no videos or songs. suggest any?
