How To Operate Ubuntu Server ? [ Help Me ! ]

Hi,

I just want to know some basic knowledge about operating and using UBuntu servers.

Some do's and don't s and give me some tips.

This is the first time I'm using Ubuntu server. I have knowledge in using Windows OS and Windows Servers.

I just bought Ubuntu servers for hosting my site.

Can I Use Putty to connect to Linux (Ubuntu) Server.. Or Is There Any Other Clients For Ubuntu Other Than Putty..

I know Ubuntu can be used as Remote Desktop Connection, (RDP) in that can I rip movies ? install bitorrent to seed etc ?

SSH, yes install openssh-server
Rip movies, sure, over RDP, sure if you have the movie in the drive in the computer that your remoted into
Sure you can install bittorrent to seed - I use Transmission and usually seed Ubuntu when I download it. Sometimes Mint.

All on the server end, SSH yes, RDP only if you have a GUI installed (e.g. gnome, kde, xfce4, etc.) and RDP software, bittorrent, yup there's CLI bittorrent software.

I find the big difference between managing Windows server and managing Ubuntu to be:


On Windows you use a mouse, menus and buttons. On Ubuntu you use a text-editor and configuration-files.
On Windows I don't find any clear answers on the Interweb to my problems, while typing an Ubuntu question in Google mostly results in some handy tutorial.

But you say you bought Ubuntu Servers for hosting your site, ask for do's and don't s and your third question is about ripping movies and seeding torrents...... :-k

Perhaps try to cancel the buy for a while and play around with Ubuntu server (on your desktop in a virtual environment) until you are comfortable with it. If you are desperately looking for RDP and such, there is a long way to go until you have your perfect Ubuntu secure multi-purpose server up and running from scratch.
