Frozen Login Screen

I just switched from ubuntu 10.04 to kubuntu 10.04 and I'm having the same type of problem in both. In ubuntu i would boot up to the login screen, login and my desktop would be frozen except for the mouse (I still couldn't type or click). Then I'd have to restart, login as a guest and try again. In kubuntu, I boot up and the keyboard won't type, nor will the mouse move from the middle of the screen or click.

I forgot to mention.. there's also a purple screen that says ubuntu that flashes before the login screen appears. I'm running the live cd right now, are there any changes I can make from here?

What graphics card do you have? and how did you install Kubuntu? Are you running Compiz?

i have an ati radeon xpress, i installed kubuntu from a cd with the .iso from the website and no, im not using compiz.
