Hello everyone! This is my first post and I just got though trying to install Ubuntu along side windows 7 and Linux Mint. Linux Mint was my first try with Linux and I like it so far. I wanted to try out Ubuntu (I know they are very similar). I made an install disc (64amd desktop) and went though the entire process of installing. The insulation looked like everything went right and when I restarted my computer just like the installation said to do. I cannot get into Ubuntu or Mint now, Windows 7 boots fine. When I try and boot into Ubuntu my computer just goes into a sleep mode. When I try and boot into Mint my computer just sits in the boot mode with a bunch of letter and numbers.
Is the problem that I cant triple boot my computer?
I'm running a Dell desktop, AMD 64 dual core, 500HD 300gigs to widows and Ubuntu and Mint splitting the rest. Thank you for your help!

troysos,

Welcome to the Ubuntu forums. For us to understand what is wrong, please go to the following site. Download and run the boot info script, then post the contents of RESULTS.txt here.
http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net

We will probably be able to tell from RESULTS.txt, but were Ubuntu and Mint separate installations or did you try the Wubi (within Windows) version? If both were Wubi, I recommend visiting this site:
Wubi Megathread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1639198)

Thank you for helping me. I installed Mint months ago and it was a separate install dual booted with windows. I tried installing Ubuntu the same way. The results were

Maybe I didn't do that right.

Maybe I didn't do that right.

It's the correct contents. :-)

Try opening the RESULTS.txt with Gedit (Applications, Accessories, Text Editor), then CTRL-A to highlight, CTRL-c to copy, then CTRL-v to paste into a new post.

You can press the "Preview Post" button at the bottom of the post to see what it's going to look like before you "Submit Reply". Don't use any type of formatting, although pasting within "code" tags is preferred (with the # icon).

I have tried 7 times to install Ubuntu Lucid from LiveCD and a USB-HDD image of that, onto a new PC with 2.5" m-SATA HDD. Installation proceeds smoothly, but it will not boot. Early messages (too quick to follow) suggest failure to mount /dev (?). This system will support WinXP (which I don't want) do no hardware problem. The actual LiveCD was used to install Ubuntu on another PC, OK. Ubuntu runus in "trial" mode on this new PC. I have checked fdisk -l and that indicates that the HDD is bootable. [I am a newbie]. I have tried to use grub-install but that fails, and its man pages seem to be written for a different OS, so no luck there.

This is madness! What is wrong? What can I do? Would this "RESULTS.txt" be of help, if so where is it please?

Thanks for any suggestions!

softappstudio,

Please open your own thread, as it can get confusing to discuss different issues within the same thread. You can just copy your entry from this post, and you can post the RESULTS.txt, which you get by running the boot info script from here:
http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net

Since Mint was working and now you can't get into it, let's get it working again by pointing Grub2 to your Mint installation. From a LiveCD:

sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda

If Mint boot,s run:

sudo update-grub

I don't know specifically why Ubuntu isn't working for you, but this should at least get Mint back and allow you to pick which OS you want to use.

Thank you Master Roaster. Sorry I placed this is the wrong thread, it looked perfect for my problem, but I have now posted <along with my RESULTS.txt> in my very own thread.
