Xubuntu or Ubuntu?

Hi, I am currently dual booting Xubuntu (Dapper Drake beta2) and Windows Xp .
I've been using Xp for a while and not tried Ubuntu in ages, and thought i'd try Xubuntu because of everyone on here saying how fast it is, however, I find that it isn't really fast at all.. do applications really load faster than in Ubuntu? because its much much faster in Xp for me.

My laptop has 512mb memory and a 1.8ghz pentium-m...

For instance termnial seems to take ages to load upon clicking and well, I don't think it should do since this interface is supposedly such a small footprint :p

Anywho, it'll proberbly break when I install the nvidia drivers, cya soon! :p

If you have 512 MB of RAM, Xubuntu will be faster, but not that much faster.

Yes, with more RAM, the difference is less noticeable. Give it a shot with 256 MB or below and you'll start to notice a difference.

Gnome seems faster to me for some reason.

However I remember why I installed xp last time, the nvidia driver just dosn't want to work with my laptop, I get a black screen and a flashing curser in top left corner, which stops flashing after a few seconds and requires a hardreboot :(
