View Full Version : [ubuntu] LTSP, XRDP and freeNX on desktop

Hello,
I have a configuration question.

What I basically want is:
My desktop/useraccount (and others in my house) on multiple machines in my home and remote on my laptop when I am out (connected to wifi). It would be nice to access my desktop even when I haven't got my laptop with me, from someone else's computer.

So what I was thinking:
1 Set up a LTSP server on my desktop so that I can login to my desktop/useraccount from old computers/laptops.
2 Set up a freeNX server on my desktop so that I can remote login from my laptop.
3 Set up a xRDP so I can login form a windows machine via RDP.

From what I have read on the net, freeNX would be way faster than xRDP. Is this correct?

For my laptop I am thinking about 2 grub options: 1 LTSP boot for home use (no running hdd after boot). 2 Stand alone boot (no wifi), freeNX (with wifi).

Would it be possible to boot my desktop (freeNX server) automatically on a NX client login? So when I try to login remotely and my desktop is shutdown it starts to boot. Doesn't matter if it takes 10 minutes to really get logged on.

Is my setup doable or is there a more simple, resource friendly or otherwise better way?
Or do I have to much imagination?

It would be great to have my desktop (file system, configuration and applications) on my fingertips wherever I am. Or is this an Ethiopia?

Thanks in advance for your input,:)
