how to sat up a mail server?

Guys i have a friends community. and i want to send them email every day. so i need to install a mail server.
when i search i found citadel (http://www.citadel.org).
But i dont know how to set up it. i reed there documentation but as i am new so i have no idea how to set up a mail server.
instead of using hotmail or any these service i want my own and private for my comunity. can any one help me what i need to do. and what thing or softwares are required.? ;)
