What happened to www.linux.org?

I was halfway through one of the very useful tutorials on www.linux.org when suddenly they disappeared. They've been down for a couple weeks now. Dose anybody know where they went? Are their lessons backed up anywhere? Can anybody recommend other tutorials or lessons?

So does anyone actually know what is going on with Linux.org? I am under the impression that either they are 100% down or that some major ISP backbones such as the midwest Qwest have blocked them for whatever reason.
Can anyone confirm whether or not they can get to linux.org at all from anywhere?

I had a buddy just tell me that. Thanks for the sentiment, but linux.com is no where close to the epic awesomeness on linux.org. :guitar: I have had a few friends tell me that they are unable to get there as well and both are on separate coasts in the US. So maybe they are just down...... for a long time already...

thank you all for the links you have given as I have been wondering why linux.org has been down for so long. Thanks to the links provided I will be able to help a friend easily transition to linux from windows completely getting rid of that train wreck microsoft calls a "os". And it will make life easier on me to try and explain things to him as I am not fully versed in all that is linux.

As this is top link for a Google search of "what happened to Linux.org" I really wish someone who was involved with the site could give a shout to the community. Surely we could find someone to host it. I followed their SCO Timeline throughout the affair, and I first noticed that linux.org was gone when returning to read through it again.

Sad.

On the other hand, the site had seemed to be much less active over the last few years. Maybe it's a case of attrition and the last person involved with the site died/went broke/Switched to BSD. Who knows.

Alas, it's had that message for months. From web.archive.org, (http://wayback.archive.org/web/*/linux.org) the last snapshot that had content was in March, 2011. The next entry is from July, with the bandwidth message. I would think that if it was a simple case of "you exceeded your bandwidth" the situation would have been corrected - or at least explained - by now.

I doubt that we'll ever find out what happened. But that doesn't mean we can't replicate the resource. I'm tossing the idea in my head over a fast food Chicken Fried Steak & Gravy biscuit this morning. It occurs to me that if this thread is 3 pages long now, perhaps the demand is strong enough to make it worth the effort.

I can't say that I immediately have the resources to serve the site from my home, but I work for a small software company that might be open to it. I have no clue as to what kind of traffic linux.org generated.

Those details can be worked out - but if the owners of that domain are going to make the site active again soon, there's no sense replicating their effort. If they are *not* coming back, I think it'd be a worthwhile idea.

I wonder when Linux.org will be back. There page keeps switching between a "Bandwidth limit exceeded" error and a "We are returning soon" message. I really hope that it isn't gone forever.

The fact of the message saying "WE ARE RETURNING SOON!!!!" indicates to me that www.linux.org (http://www.linux.org) still "belongs" to the same people. The "bandwidth exceeded" message that sometimes appears suggests to me that the site "owner" is using a crap hosting deal and needs to switch host or something. If (as I expect) the site is being run voluntarily, in people's spare time, and financed out of their own pockets and/or through donations, this could all take some time. Especially if they have to wait for the current crummy hosting contract to expire before they can migrate the url linux.org to another hosting company/contract/whatever.

Anyway, there's nothing to worry about. There are lots of free sites on the web which can be used by newbies and wizards alike. Prsonally, I like The Linux Documentation Project site (at tldp.org (http://tldp.org/)) as it covers a wide range of Linux issues. I've been using tldp.org since I began using Linux (in 2005/2006) and I still find it helpful. <evil-dictator-mode>I think tldp.org should be bookmarked in everyone's web browsers. Moo hoo ha ha!</evil-dictator-mode>.
