My system will only boot to a GRUB menu. I can not resume and get to the graphic interface. If I select safe graphic mode the system seems to hang. Blank screen and no disc activity. If I select command mode I can run startx and get the graphical interface however it is obviously the root desktop.

Attached is my bootifno

Is it a root display or just a low quality default to let you install the correct graphic driver?

What video card do you have?

With my Nvidia I have to replace quiet splash with nomodeset to boot the first time.

On first boot after install, press e on getting the GRUB bootloader.
Hold shift from BIOS boot to get menu if only one system installed.
Using arrow keys navigate to and delete quiet and splash and type the word nomodeset in their place
Press Ctrl and X to boot (low graphics mode)

After I installed Nvidia driver (default from pop up) then it has worked without issue.
gksudo nvidia-settings
Or it should be in System>administration>Hardware drivers.
Possible additional things to run once nvidia working:
gksudo nvidia-settings
sudo nvidia-xconfig

Some other settings:
http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2010/05/06/ubuntu-10-04-lucid-blank-screen-at-startup-workaround/
* Older Intel video card: i915.modeset=1 or i915.modeset=0
* nVidia: nomodeset
* Generic: xforcevesa or nouveau.modeset=0
* Radeon: radeon.modeset=0

Your suggestions seemed right-on to me. If I was an UBUNTU server I would have responded appropriately. However I am not, and doing as you suggested did nothing for the state of my server...

If there are no other suggestions, I may just bite the bullet and re-install with the most current build....
