Errors when I try to reboot a new install

I am new to ubuntu

I am trying to install 10.04 on a ten year old Dell computer. The disk loads the hard drive but will not reboot because I get error codes like this. [67666.465336] end request: I/O error, dev sro, sector 502852

There seems to be room on the hard drive and it has /dev/sda1 with 9.5 GB and /dev/sda 5 with 475 MB.

Does anyone know where I start to fix?

sound like a hdd issue, verify it (bad blocks) or reformat it
