View Full Version : [ubuntu] upgrading hardware, which binaries to update?

January 28th, 2011, 06:08 PM

A quick question for linux hardware gurus

I am familiar with the hardware but not the linux binaries

1) If the new and old hardware use the same basic binary (e.g. 32-bit x86) do I need to reinstall?

2) How do I get a list of which of the packages/files are compiled for which architecture?

3) If I will have to reinstall is there a quick way to do an over the top upgrade?

It's 10.04

I understand i will need to replace the drivers.

Thanks all, in advance.

[edit]: PS obviously I am talking about new motherboard and cpu, not a sound card!

welcome onboard :)

the linux (ubuntu) logic is different compared to winblow world. The kernel is clever enough to detect the hardware then load the required drivers, its automatic you dont need to worry about such questions.

Lot of info into the links below

Mine must be broken then. I had to manually update printer and graphics drivers (the basic one is really slow).
