LOL! i'm buying a mac. (i can always put netbsd on it.)

ok, so tell me the noticable differences a commandline loving end user will notice between linux (ubuntu, not some fruitcake rebel distro) and OSX. hit me!

If it's anything like the iMac I have here, the main difference is that it won't boot.

Good luck.

If you do most of the stuff through the command line, things will not be too different. The graphical stuff may take a while to get used to (that weird dock, single button mouse, etc).

you can't customize!!
ugh... it's the most important feature! lol...

As long as you're staying with UNIX! but...

It's not free software! hay! well that's definitely the biggest advantage linux has...

personally, I don't have much experience with OS X, a bit of fiddling with my friendscomputer, even more fiddling in the computer store:rolleyes:
So I can't tell you much, but from what I've seen I don't think I like OS X.

And I also heard it's not that stable, is that correct?

And why pay the ****** capitalists when you can get (nearly) evrything you've got in OS X in ubuntu?

yeah, I know, no one will understand that message.. lol

^you were right

i hate when everyone says "why would you use/buy/get this when you could use ubuntu?"

i hate when everyone says "why would you use/buy/get this when you could use ubuntu?"
oh no no no...

I didn't mean "why pay when you can get free", I meant "why pay the *&^%$ capitalists when you can get free...

I'm against capitalism, so naturally I'm against buying something off someone(especially when it's just bits and bytes!) when you've got a nice, community maintained product...

I'll pass you on the way out and be sure to wave. :)

Using OS X at this moment actually... so let me outline some differences for you.

1- forget installing stuff from the command line, unless it is not a GUI program at all, or something you have to compile which doesn't happen very often - if ever. There is no 'apt-get' or similar utility at the CLI. I use the CLI for quick editing of text files, checking on some processes if I don't feel like opening process viewer, or killing a stubborn process as root when all else fails.

2- No, it's not as customizable as stated above. However, notice how a lot of Gnome themes are attempts at mimicking the OS X look? Yeah. OS X is beautiful, and after using it since public beta I can tell you it just keeps getting better.

3- Installing applications: find an app you like online, check out versiontracker (http://versiontracker.com) for just about everything, that is our "software repository" so get used to it. Click the download link and there will be a .dmg file in most cases, which is a disk image that mounts like a drive. Inside that is the app. Drag it to the Applications folder, your documents folder, the desktop, wherever... then open it. That's it. The .app files are actually folders referred to as "bundles" and they include everything necessary for running the application.

4- Community. My favorite is MacNN forums (http://forums.macnn.com/), you can usually find an answer to your question there.

5- On Mac OS X, Gaim is called "Adium." :)

6- OS updates are to the tune of $130. Get used to it. The first one is "free" with your machine.

7- Lots of nice apps are included for free, but there are several iApps that will cost you some extra $$$ - iPhoto is really nice, but it comes with the iLife suite which is bundled with iMacs and iBooks only I think. Otherwise it's $40 which isn't bad. iTunes is the best. app. ever. Nothing on linux comes close.

8- Many linux apps have been ported to OS X: vlc, mplayer, celestia, azureus, open office (neo office (http://www.neooffice.org/)) and Gimp to name a few.

9- Halo works... pop in the CD and install it (sorry, I like Halo).

So there are just a couple of things to think about as you migrate to your new OS. You'll have fun exploring the new system... as I'm having fun exploring my new system. :D

The difference?

Well you'd be happily enjoying your blue back-lit keyboard at night while working in the terminal if you buy a 15" Powerbook. ;) Very cool!

And I also heard it's not that stable, is that correct?

you've probably heard the same thing about me.

i want a laptop. instead of getting an hp, or a lenovo, and putting linux on it, i decided i wanted something different. i'll still have my desktop with ubuntu, so this way, i'll have two computers and more variety. my computer is a toy for me. i do nothing useful with it. i get on the internet, send email and put the heads of my friends on the bodies of barn animals.

i love linux, but one of the problems i have with it, personally, is the desktop themes. there seems an infinite variety of them, but most of them don't appeal to me [ah]fugly[/choo!]. getting a mac = more variety and prettier themes (at least, to me). and, if i hate it, i can always dual boot, put ubuntu or netbsd on it, or dump it on ebay.

regarding the hatred of capitalism - your parents must have a lot of money. rich kids are the only people, in america at least, who can afford to hate capitalism. "kill the bosses!"

you do realize that osx only has one theme, right?

Even if you do buy some shareware and get a theme changer, all the themes for osx are basically just color variations of aqua.

hmm... that would be a bit inaccurate for todays world... especially for me, as i don't have parents.

It's not only blind hatred to capitalism, I come from a different political theory, anarchism. I'm against capitalism because I think the idea is wrong, I object to any kind of hierarchy.

What has that got with having rich parents?

you know, you don't really need much money to live, happily...

As long as you don't mind living like a gypsy, life is pretty much free. It's the rent that gets you in debt.

Mac OS is great for people who don't want to use terminal for anything. That's a really big deal for most Mac users.

regarding the hatred of capitalism - your parents must have a lot of money. rich kids are the only people, in america at least, who can afford to hate capitalism. its seems to be quite true. when i was at uni, all the rich kids went the other way, almost as if they were trying to play down their wealth. there are poor people who hate capitalism too, but its usually the rich one's who hate it the most and have good reason too. its a bit like the people who have the greatest and most passionate hatred about smoking are the ex-smokers themselves.
anyway, enough of my rambling :p

I was googling for windows themes and i found this thread with mac users talking about a windows dock.

http://forums.macnn.com/archive/index.php/t-273453.html

First, you will be in a community full of people like this.

Second, the two people in that thread that arent complete morons stated quite clearly that theming on a mac is worthless.

yes, i realize that. i like the variations.

btw, is there a way to have my desktop and this future laptop interact? (is that what networking is?) might as well make a big mess.

it's true, i'm hilarious, but i know absolutely nothing about networking or even what it is. i don't know anything about computers, for that matter, except from just messing with them.

There are various things which Linux just isn't properly capable of right now---e.g. serious media/audio/graphics software.

OS updates are to the tune of $130. Get used to it. The first one is "free" with your machine.

I'd heard something along these lines. How often do you get charged?

iTunes is the best. app. ever. Nothing on linux comes close.

It's great, isn't it---I still miss it, or at least I miss aspects of it. I never used the actual iTunes store (and wouldn't, on principle, because of the issues with playing back the downloaded files), but I loved it as a media player.

Does it play Ogg Vorbis these days?

Updates are free.
An OS upgrade will cost you around $130 (used to be $150).

fun networking.

install freeciv at both ends and play against a friend.

install avahi-daemon in dapper and then turn on sharing in rhythmbox, now it will share with itunes.

ssh X forwarding. lets you log into the ubuntu machine and run programs which get displayed on the mac os x machine. (wont work the other way around because the apple apps are not X11 apps.)

Right - the small updates (10.3.2 -> 10.3.3) are free and automatic through the software updater. When you go from 10.3 to 10.4 however, it's $130. Like going from breezy to dapper.

Just to prevent confusion for new folks browsing the forum. The fee going from breezy to dapper is $0.00. There are no fees for anything. Unless you want commercial support I guess... There are no fees to use, run, download, update, upgrade Ubuntu.
