Well, the problem here seems to have started after I installed Gnome color changer and followed some directions on gnome-looks.org to install a certain theme (This one (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Cristal-Black?content=134953)). Well after a while of messing around, and this not happening (I was never able to install the skin), I rebooted. When the desktop loaded, the background was covered by a big gray rectangle that covers the desktop. I say it covers because I can still see the original wallpaper through the transparent panels. Also, when I try to change the wallpaper, the computer becomes unresponsive and I have to force it to restart.

Anybody have any idea what it could be?

Edit: Nevermind, it seems to have resolved itself.... strange...

Hello you guys. I've had THE SAME problem, and NO, aparently it doesn't "Fix itself"... If there's anyone out there that knows why this happens, and how to ifx it, I'd be glad to read about.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, and this happend, just as it's described above. After installing Gnome Color Chooser, the grey box appears.
Hope this get's solved.

Best of luck!

vandro87, I take that you already worked around that by just removing Gnome Color Chooser again, right!?

Its development is ceased since quite a while, and that may be the reason why it doesn't work properly anymore, in some cases.

Remove the gnome color chooser and RGBA. Everything must be fine then.

Yes, you're right but still. The fact it's development is over, doesn't mean it -just- won't work...

THANK YOU!! awsome! finally got it to work. Finally I see my desktop!! :D

One thing to notice: Reading the comments on that post, it said you MUST have Nautilus Elementary installed for it to work. Quite weird actually but, apparently THAT'S the solution.
Good luck and thank you all for the replies.
Guess that NOW it is finally solved.

Good luck!
