View Full Version : [ubuntu] Dual Booting Ubuntu and Backtrack 4 r2

Balmer25

Installed XP and ubuntu 10.10 on my netbook and have also installed BT4 r2 on separate partitions. I chose not to install the bootloader for BT4 r2 and used "sudo update-grub2" to locate Backtrack 4 which it has.
At boot I can choose both XP and Ubuntu and they will boot fine, how ever when I choose BT4 (listed as ubuntu 8.10) the following message appears:
"zImage does not support 32bit boot"
Can someone please help me so that I can boot backtrack please
Thanks
(Sorry if this is in the wrong category, also I am a complete Noob when it comes to Linux so please give detailed clear instructions thanks :) )

So we can see your entire configuration:

Boot Info Script courtesy of forum member meierfra
Page with instructions and download:
http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/
Paste results.txt, then highlight entire file and click on # in edit panel(code tags) to make it easier to read.
Or You can generate the tags first by pressing the # icon in the post's menu and then paste the contents between the generated [ code] paste here [ /code] tags.

In the backtrack menu.lst you have Backtrack and Ubuntu 8.10. I have tried to convert one of the Backtrack entries to grub2 style for you to copy into 40_custom.

Copy to:
gksudo gedit /etc/grub.d/40_custom
Then do:
sudo update-grub

menuentry "Start BackTrack FrameBuffer (1024x768)" {
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,msdos8)'
set gfxpayload=keep
linux /boot/vmlinuz BOOT=casper boot=casper nopersistent rw quiet vga=0x317
initrd /boot/initrd.gz
}
If this works then you can copy it and edit to match the other Backtrack entries. Not sure if the vga entry will be a problem. Grub2 does not use it anymore, but it looks like Backtrack expects it.

I have exactly the same situation (apart from Win 7 instead of XP) and the same error message when attempting to boot into BT4.

I've run the script suggested and this is the output:

I would appreciate any assistance in this matter.

EDIT: I've tried your suggestion above but changing the msdos8 to msdos6 to match my own however it still fails to boot and returns the same error message: zImage does not support 32 bit..try `linux16'

EDIT2: I ran sudo update-grub to push the modified 40 custom file to grub.cfg and I now see a different option within grub. I get a different error message though:

error: file not found.
error: you need to load the kernal first.

press any key to continue.

Your old grub menu.lst has two entries neither of which looks correct. One is missing root and the other uses UUID but has the wrong UUID??

So which did you copy. Please post your 40_custom.

Your files are and you have to match or use :

131.7GB: boot/initrd.img-2.6.35.8
131.8GB: boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35.8

131.7GB: initrd.img
131.8GB: vmlinuz

Note that these are not in /boot so the entry is like this for these two lines

linux /vmlinuz Boot.....
initrd /initrd.img

Indeed you are correct. Since my posting I looked over the grub.cfg file thoroughly and made multiple entries in the 40_custom. The UUID's were incorrect as you said and on closer inspection I found the correct ones to replicate the appropriate entry to successfully boot.

My 40_custom entry now looks like this:

menuentry "BackTrack 4 R2 (on /dev/sda6)" {
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,msdos6)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set a7ea5c2d-ee19-46ba-b339-0c15a5b15339
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35.8 root=UUID=a7ea5c2d-ee19-46ba-b339-0c15a5b15339 ro quiet vga=0x317
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35.8
}

Still tweaking the options somewhat (the laptop has an obscure native resolution, everything is a bit stretched) in conjunction with the vesa file within Backtrack, but it boots and works fine.

Thanks for the help though, I wouldn't have known what to look for if not for this thread.
