Have you tried OpenOffice ?

As I remember, it can handle .xlsx files.

Open *.xlsx file with OpenOffice and Save as *.xls file. :)

Also, in some cases, older versions of MS Office will open the newer "xml" files for you and allow you to save them as the old format yourself.
