From windows to linux

dear members,

i like to change from windows os to linx os.

my system as 40 gb hd
256 mb ram
intel motherboard

i searched in internet and
i have download xubuntu desktop i386.iso (716mb) but i am unable to install cleanly.

the first error its showed is " it requires 256 mb but it as only 254 mb" and i pressed continue in the dialog box.

it struck in the screen "when you are ready...."

after using many option finally it gives the informatin "you have susscefuly installed". but when i restarted the sytem i got some command line like "Grub" - i did't get any graphical screen.

what to do?

You might want to consider trying Lubuntu instead:

As to the error after installation, we would need to see the results of the boot info script to help troubleshoot the problem.

I am afraid something is wrong with the image, as it shouldn't be over 700MB. For example, the image for Xubuntu Maverick is 697MB.

This is probably just the old problem of what a kilobyte is: 1000 or 1024 bytes?

It will most likely fit on a CD, no matter how you measure the size :-) but as Rubi said: Lubuntu is a better choice.

thanks for all your reply to my post.

after download it showed more than 700mb but after writing it in the cd as image iso it comes to around 690.

i registered for a free kubuntu cd. its solve my problem?

anyway i try to download lubuntu in fews days time and install.

its possible to write the iso file in usb and install from usb?

It is possible to use USB as live usb.

In ubuntu there is an option which ask to create startup disk and you can point to the usb
it will ask for the iso image to be used to create startup disk. You can use your downloaded image
as source and usb drive as target.

Warning : USB disk must not contain any data when you are using it as a your target. You can loose the data.

By the way I would recommend that you must increase your RAM to 512 if possible since it can give you enough RAM to use the live CD.
I am using a 2006 model laptop with Intel Celeron 1.44Ghz and 512 RAM which is able to use live CD.

finally i have installed xubuntu 10.10 in my system.

yesterday i decided to try xubuntu install for last time.

i formated previous xp os and put the live cd and clicked the "try xubuntu" - i got 40gb free space

in the desktop it showed the icon "install Xubuntu" i clicked.

in the partition menu i clicked "use entire space for installation"

went well till the end with only one error ' i clicked ok" - completed the installation.

media player needs some gstreamer missing plugin?

i dont have internet connection in my home. so how to update the xubuntu 10.10 offline.? there is any service pack !!
