View Full Version : [ubuntu] Best way to do remote updates

I've been asked to sort out the updates on a number of headless remote Ubuntu boxes. However, the developers want to control which updates are installed on the machines. Is it possible to do this remotely?

My plan was to set up an Ubuntu depository, which the developers can put in the updates they want and then list it in the sources.list (and that one only). The reasoning behind this is that right now we have a few boxes, but that might become a few dozen over the next few years, so it needs to be automated as much as possible, so we don't want to micro-manage them all remotely.

The only things are:

a) I don't know how to set up my own depository (can I do it via ftp?)

b) Is that the best way to manage remote updates?

I hope I've explained that properly. Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers
