Hi everyone :p I'm new to this forum and Ubuntu as a whole (only installed it last Thursday), and I'm finding it really good so far.
I really like listening to music, and Rhythmbox is okay, but I've been looking up various other Music players for Ubuntu, and many users have a lot to say about Songbird.
However, Im a complete beginner with Ubuntu, and can't figure out how to install it, or if it's even possible now?
Any help would be appreciated! :D

Songbird cut full linux support a fair while ago. There is a fork called 'nightingale' but its still a work in progress.

But you can still get it if you want.

Gah, softpedia. Not somewhere I'd ever go for programs.....

If you really want songbird on linux, get it from the source.

1.9.1, i686-
http://download.songbirdnest.com/installer/linux/i686/Songbird_1.9.1-1920_linux-i686.tar.gz

I'm sure that there will be the 1.8.0 version up on that site....somewhere. But honestly, I wouldnt even try it.

On April 2, 2010, it was announced that POTI Inc. will drop official Linux support ending with Songbird version 1.7.2. POTI Inc. would instead focus on its Windows and Mac OS X versions of Songbird, providing only unofficial support for Linux releases.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songbird_%28software%29#cite_note-nolinux-0) That means that Linux builds are still being offered, but only as nightly builds (not in the main page) and they're not tested by the developers.

No easy way to get the .tar files from the songbird site, the added complexity for a newbie of doing the install, and added to that absolutely no support from the developers (to the point where they have 'hidden' that there is even a way to get a .tar songbird version from the main site).

Sorry to be blunt Poppy181093, but for somebody who is just starting on a linux distro, thats just to much to deal with in one go. If you were more experienced with linux it wouldnt be so bad, but songbird is stacking a lot of possible issues against a new user.

Maybe if you told us what had attracted you to songobird somebody might be able to suggest an alternate player?

I have never used softpedia, but is there any good reason why you say this?

IMO, you should never go to 3rd party sites to d/l software.

There is an increased chance of getting what you want plus an added trojan or other nasty if you go to 3rd party sites to d/l software (not that I've heard of softpedia doing that). There is also the chance that you will be getting an earlier version of the software as well.
