I have a b&w laser Brother printer. I got the Linux driver from the Brother website. The print quality is poor. 300dpi results in a speckled (big dot) look to both writing and images and 600dpi produces images that have virtually no definition--mostly a black blob.

My M$ Windows machine uses the same printer with a driver from the Brother website. It's 600dpi print jobs show great definition on images and generally produce nice prints outs.

Why does printing from Ubuntu produce crap print jobs? Is there anything i can do to remedy this?

First of all You should tell what is your printer model. Have You tried native linux drivers?

There are 2 kind of printers: those wich follow standards having real PCL5/6 support (thus beeing properly working with cups) and cheap so called "winprinters", that are using wrappers to simulate capabilties that the printer just don't really have.
