View Full Version : [ubuntu] Unable to boot using GRUB

OK, here's a rundown of what happened.

I have my system set up with 4 HDD's, each with its own OS. There is Win XP for legacy stuff I still need on sda, Ubuntu 10.04 for everyday stuff on sdb, another drive that wouldn't boot (sdc) because the loader for PC-BSD and GRUB 2 don't play well together, and Win 7 for games on sdd.

About 10 days ago, I was on in Win 7 when it kicked up an error stating that there was a failure detected in the hard disk drive. A bit of checking confirmed that is was sdb, the drive containing Ubuntu and of course, GRUB. I wasn't able to reboot to Ubuntu and loading Win 7 worked sometimes but it took forever to get to the selection screen. I booted up with System Recovery Disk was not able to read the disk with the recovery tools there. The disk was shot.

I got a new drive from Newegg and just got everything put back together a couple days ago. The install went fine, but when I restarted to apply the kernel update, it went right to Win 7 instead, bypassing GRUB all together. I restarted with a livecd of PCLinuxOS in the cd drive and installed that to sdc to try it out. Restarted to apply kernel and video driver updates. Same deal, went straight back to Win 7 on sdd. I can boot anything if I start with the SuperGRUB 1.30 disk in the CD drive, but for some reason it just won't see the install on the hard disk. I had everything running fine before the disk failure; even had a customized selection screen with a nice background and the older kernels and memtest option removed. As I recall, I was having this problem when I first upgraded to 10.04 from 8.04 a year ago, and I can't recall what I did to fix it. What would my next step be please?
Thanks.

Let's get a better look at your setup & boot process. Boot the Ubuntu Live CD/USB. Choose "try ubuntu without any changes", when the desktop loads come back here and do the following:

1. Download the boot info script. There is a link in my signature.
2. Once downloaded move the boot info script to the desktop.
3. Open a terminal and run the command
sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh

This will create a RESULTS.txt file on the desktop. Paste the entire contents of that file back here. Once pasted highlight all text and click the # sign on the toolbar to place code tags around the text.

See here (http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/) for more info on the boot info script.

From what I can tell it seems to be looking now to sdc for the grub legacy file (PCLOS still uses that???) but I can't see why it would behave the same way before and after installing PCLOS.
In any event, thanks for the help.

All right, here goes:

It appears you have the appropriate Grub2 files on sdb1 but Grub2 is not installed on any mbr.

The easiest way to fix this is to boot the LiveCD, open a terminal and run the following commands:

sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdb

Note in the second command you are not including the partition number.

After running the above, reboot without the CD. Make sure BIOS points first to the sdb (Ubuntu) drive.

It should boot to the Grub2 menu, and your Windows entries should be included. After booting, just to ensure it's picked up all the OSs, run:

sudo update-grub

If for some reason Grub2 is not fully installed we may need to reinstall it from the LiveCD, but try the above first.

Well, now I'm using the wiki http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Lucid_Installation_Guide (here) to try to get everything at least back where it was. It worked a couple weeks ago, but now it's giving me this:

hirnrissigermann@HAL:~$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
ia32-libs: Depends: lib32gcc1 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libc6-i386 (>= 2.3.6-2) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: lib32z1 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: lib32stdc++6 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: lib32asound2 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: lib32bz2-1.0 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: lib32ncurses5 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: lib32v4l-0 but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

I tried to install each individually, and have had no luck. I just want to get my system as close as possible to the state it was in 2 weeks ago before the drive failure; where I should I go from here?

Hi,
glad you got the booting issues sorted out.

For the packages, try this:

sudo apt-get install -f

sudo dpkg --configure -a
