Ubuntu 9.4 upgrade to 10.10

Hello i am currently using ubuntu 9.4 and i want to upgrade it to ubuntu 10.10 without losing my existing system because the packages needed by me are well installed and working well in my system.

So how can i upgrade my version to newer one. i have downloaded all the later versions 9.10, 10.4 and 10.10 ..
