How do I turn My 8.04 Ubuntu Hardy Desktop into a Hardy Server when the distro support expires in April 2011?Go to Synaptic and download / install all the server components. After that, it is just about the configuration (which I cannot help with as I have not set up an Ubuntu server yet).

Well what I really wanna do is keep some kind of updates going after April 2011 when the Desktop version runs out.

So...um...why don't you upgrade to 10.04? That would also solve your update problem.

Why not install the server edition? Either way I'd go with upgrading it to 10.04, it's LTS too and has long support

One way or another, they will not support the graphical environment. You will probably only get security updated for the server components (kernel, ssh, apache ... )

Consider upgrading to 10.04.

Moving to Lucid is your best bet. Desktop or server, either one will work.

The whole point is I DONT want to upgrade! I want to keep some kind of updates WITHOUT upgrading Hardy. Servers get 5 years of Updates LTS Desktop gets 3.

The server meta-package gets updates. So even if you installed the sever kernels and Lamp stack your other applications would still be insecure.
