When I click on the wireless I get a message saying that I am missing firmware.

I've tried connecting via ethernet, however this doesn't work either, would it be a problem if I just found a download for firmware, downloaded on another comp and copy it to my linux computer?

Do you know the chipset of your wireless?

Also try navigating to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers

Are there any drivers for wireless adaptor?

Just to make sure what's in your computer could you execute the following commands and post the output here? Could you do this with the wired Internet plugged in so we see if there is something there?

sudo lspci -k
sudo lsusb
sudo ifconfig

To execute the commands you can press alt + F2, type gnome-terminal and click run. Then copy one command and paste it in the terminal (black screen that showed up after you clicked run). Use the mouse to paste commands in the terminal.
Then you can select all the text in the terminal, right click and select copy. When pasting it here please wrap it in

tags. In other words:
Your pasted stuff
Sorry for the multiple posts, for some reason it kept coming back with an error about the proxy or something and I couldn't see my post but they have all come up on it now.

Very weird

It looks like your cable Internet is connected, it has an IP address.

Your wireless doesn't show at all: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g

With the cable plugged in you can go to system -> hardware drivers and the broadcom should show there.
Make sure the cable is connected and you have Internet through cable.

I still need to get the wired connection to work, when I have it all plugged in, it says "connection established" but when I try ping google.com for example I get unknown host.

As for broadcom, when I went sytem -> administration -> additional hardware drivers I do get the option to activate broadcom however you need to download it and install. Thats a problem when the connection isn't working. And is why I questioned whether or not I could download it somewhere else and place it on my linux comp and install manually.

To install it manually you can do the following:
I assume you have 10.10 installed
Download and install this package:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/b43-fwcutter

Download the following file to your desktop
http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2

Then run the following commands:

cd ~/Desktop
tar xjf broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2
cd broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4/linux
sudo b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware wl_apsta.o
sudo service network-manager stop
sudo service network-manager startYou could not download and install the packages because the firmware package wants to download the broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2 file.

Maybe needs a reboot but I think it'll show your wireless card now. If it still doesn't detect any wireless networks please post the output of the following command:

sudo rfkill list

Still strange your ethernet card gets an IP but can't connect to the Internet, do you need to use a proxy or something?

Hi again, I've done what you said today and have managed to get the wireless working

I'm now having another problem that is the wireless keeps cutting out, i'm pretty sure it isn't my wireless as it works fine when I run windows on my laptop.

Any ideas as to what this could be?

Also thanks alot for getting me to this stage, much appreciated.

Whenever it just disconnects could you post the output of the following command (last lines if anything there about wireless):

dmesg

Ok here is what I get when it disconnected

Once i've disconnected its near impossible to get any connection and so far have only been able to load google up once.

Here are the last 4 lines

I've got the whole log if that would help

[ 46.725322] wlan0: authenticate with 00:1c:df:55:90:ff (try 1)
[ 46.925053] wlan0: authenticate with 00:1c:df:55:90:ff (try 2)
[ 47.125073] wlan0: authenticate with 00:1c:df:55:90:ff (try 3)
[ 47.325070] wlan0: authentication with 00:1c:df:55:90:ff timed out
[ 50.761045] wlan0: no IPv6 routers present

I'm looking to setup IPv6 routers however I thought that it was an automatic wireless setup

cheers

According to google there is no IPv6 support on new belkin routers.

Does disabling ipv6 help in stabilizing it. If it doesn't there might be some other output in the command you did before that give us a clue.

Right click on the network icon and choose "edit connections", there should be a wireless tab with you wireless connection, press edit again and in "ipv6 settings" tab and for method choose ignore.
