View Full Version : [SOLVED] Some issues with Lucid on a HP notebook

I have sometimes been experiencing the lack of right-click menus, drop-down (sub) menus and keyboard input not working. For the most part, rebooting corrects it. What could be the problem with this?

I have Lucid dual-booted with Win7Pro on a HP Pavilion dv6835nr notebook. Here's output from LSHW:

I don't know if it's hardware related or in the OS. Just thought that ouput of LSHW might be a starting point. Anyone else having issues with the sub-menus from the top panel not showing?

and I have recently found out that this issue doesn't allow the screensaver to function.

I have also found out that this issue doesn't allow the screensaver to function.

It seems like it's video driver related, though you wont have many options with your onboard Intel chip.

For example, I have a Nvidia card, if I have the option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" set to "False" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, I have pretty the same behaviour like you, sometimes the desktop icons are not there, no right-click, sometimes the panels don't get loaded, sometimes both, though I can't confirm the screensaver issue, haven't tried it at that time.

You may look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and ~/.xsession-errors for error messages.

I experienced similar issues w/ my Macbook Pro (2,1)

Adding mouseemu fixed it. For others with non-apple devices, removing mouseemu fixed it. Try disabling the trackpad. It seems it's possible for it to interfere w/ Video drivers. (As previous post mentioned it could also be the video.) But since removing/adding mouseemu is a simple thing to try, and easily reversible. (sudo apt-get install mouseemu or sudo apt-get remove mouseemu, then reboot)

I just found out what creates the issue my HP notebook is experiencing. The little button on top of the touchpad to enable/disable it. I will try what is stated in the previous message and see what happens.

Installed mouseemu and it doesn't seem to help the issue. I will un-install mouseemu.

I'm open for any other suggestions.

Thnks.

Krytarik: I will look into this and see if it tells me anything, and I'll post a reply to this.

Here's another part of the equation. I have also been using a Logitech M205 USB mouse. This issue hasn't happened when the USB mouse is not plugged in. So could there be a conflict between this USB mouse and the Synaptics TouchPad? And is there a log file to look for errors for this?

DAB4970
February 12th, 2011, 11:36 PM
Krytarik: I did a search in SYSTEM for xsession.errors using Nautilus and nothing came up.
So, I am going with it being video driver related.

Krytarik

Krytarik: I did a search in SYSTEM for xsession.errors using Nautilus and nothing came up.
It's a hidden file in your home directory.
Any errors regarding the pointer devices should be logged in the mentioned Xorg.0.log.

I didn't find and "EE" (errors) in the file so maybe there's something more specific to look for. Here is that file's readings:

I also don't see any serious errors in the log.
When did the issue occur the last time? AFAIK, if any errors occur, it is either logged in Xorg.0.log or "~/.xsession-errors". Did you find the latter then? It must be there.
There are also archived Xorg-logs in the same directory, check them as well, each is of one xserver-session.

PS: You should use the code-tags (the # button in the editor) when posting outputs, commands or logs.
