I just ran an upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 using the update manager, and now I cannot get any graphics display, just a tty1. GDM fails with the following warning "failed to acquire org.gnome.DisplayManager" and another "Could not acquire name; bailing out".
Have tried uninstalling/re-installing gdm and gde, and also nvidia-173 ... all with zero effect. I am sure I missed something "really basic", but if someone can give me a hint I'd really appreciate it.
