Hi,

I am about to get a new LCD primary for software development. I am wondering what is the best LCD size and resolution for a software developer?

Is it a 19" 1680*1050 or something like 24" 1920 x 1200 or something else?

I mostly do coding in Eclipse...

Any experience and comments?

Thanks.

A friend of mine prefers a pair of 1920x1200 24" monitors. Of course, he also does TONS of system admin tasks, too.

Ah, yes. God Bless good 'ole MS-DOS.

I remember rocking an 80x25 system in school. Oh yes.

Who needs more than that?

I'd go for the largest size screen & the greatest number of them that I could afford.

I use a pair of 24" 1920x1080 monitors.

I keep wishing for a bit more height. I think the 1920x1200 would be better. I have one of them on a swivel so I can tilt it if I have an especially long method/function/procedure (depending on your language) to look at.

24" is a nice size, it's easier on old eyes and still small enough you can fit 2 of them on the desk.

1920x1080 has gotten really cheap for pretty good monitors because of the 1080p TV format. If I could swing the 1920x1200 ones I think that would definitely be worth it.

I contemplated the super-huge Apple 30" display, 2560 x 1600. Thing is, I would have to bump the font size up a bit on that because the dots are so small.

Whatever you use, get a completely digital signal path. The old-style analog monitor plugs are a killer on your eyes.

At work, I have 2x 19" 4:3 and 2x 24" 19:16. I really like having the 24" monitors rotated to portrait mode. Monitors that are as tall as possible are the best for development. Widescreen monitors are only valuable if you can rotate them.

I have a 1680x1050 display and it feels somewhat cramped. Get bigger if you can,
