This is not really a support request as I doubt any one can help me with this it is so unusual.

My mom has Ubuntu 10.04 on her laptop using Firefox. If I send her a message on the Facebook Web chat, it spawns a session of VLC, so after a few messages she has like 10 instances of VLC open. :o

I think I might just reinstall it rather than debug it.

VLC has been showing some odd behavior lately.

Sounds to me that the wrong plugin has been associated to the chat in Preferences, but what do I know? I don't chat and I avoid anything having to do with facebook like the plague. Won't catch me bookfacing, nosiree bob.

It sounds like the plugin association in firefox is pointing to VLC for whatever sound is used by facebook chat. I seem to recall getting errors about not having the correct plugin installed if anybody starts a chat with me on there, so it seems like a good place to start looking :)

Gotcha. Yeah it is pretty strange. I think I tried disabling the plugin not sure if it helped or not.

This could be a great practical joke.

I had a very similar problem . . . most of my places options took me not to downloads, or home, or where ever, but to VLC. Look at this thread.

Pay special attention to post 11. New accounts are not necessary. See if you can apply post 11 to your situation. It worked for me.

Sounds like a support question to me.

Actually, I never though about that, but I do not think it is the problem. I will indeed get back to you. Also it is really not a support question as I have already debugged this myself, and I just wanted to share the oddity. :)

The facebook chat "pop" sound is an mp3 file that is usually properly played by the browser. Firefox may be trying to open this file in VLC.
