I believe it's being done on windows with rainmeter and/or rocketdock

does ubuntu have an equivalent? that looks just as cool?

You hotlinked an image from a website, and they have hotlink protection, so it's not showing. Save the image on an image hosting site and update your post. You might be able to see the image yourself, because it's still in your browser's cache.

I think conky could give you something along those lines if you've got the scripts to follow.

Not sure about that satellite weather map, but everything else in your screenshot can be accomplished with Conky.

this post on 4chan was a definate troll. this screenshot was made with photochop.

however, this can beachieved using conky. check out the lua scripts, it can draw some cool stuff on the desktop.

can't get conky to work?
installed it from the package manager
typed conky in the command prompt
but it got to "Conky: drawing to single buffer"
then froze
